The Tremiti archipelago is situated about 10 sea miles from the Gargano coast and includes St. Domino Island, mainly covered by Aleppo pinewoods, St. Nicholas Island, historical, religious and administrative centre of the archipelago, Capraia Island and – nearly 11 miles away from them – Pianosa Island, solitary, uninhabited and almost barren, plus numerous rocks among which Cretaccio and La Vecchia.
The archipelago, a protected marine reserve part of the Gargano National Park , is bound to the name of Diomedes, the Greek hero who, according to popular tradition, died on St. Domino island ( in fact the Tremiti islands are also known as Diomedes Islands). The Tremiti islands do not just feature numerous hotels and campsites, crystal clear sea and a natural environment of unutterable beauty, but are also famous for the abbey of St. Mary by the Sea, built in immaculate tufa stone.
